The product standard DIN VDE V 0126-95 (December 2025) allows a layperson to plug a system into a normal Schuko socket when the inverter delivers at most 800 VA and the panels total at most 960 Wp. Above 960 Wp the standard expects a special energy socket.
The law (Solarpaket I, May 2024) allows up to 2,000 Wp of panels with 800 VA. So 2,000 Wp on a Schuko plug is legal, but not standard compliant. In an insurance case, experts look at the standard.
Registration is a short online form in the Marktstammdatenregister of the Federal Network Agency. No separate notice to the grid operator is needed for the solar device itself.
Not yet confirmed
- Whether a balcony battery must also be notified to the grid operator: sources disagree (federal ministry fact sheet versus ADAC).
- Draft IEC 60364-7-751 could require a dedicated circuit in future.
